Expert Advice

Is YOUR BIZ Ready for the OSHA Changes? (PART 2)?

1. Injury and Illness Prevention Programs
In order to insure that American workplaces are safe OSHA believes there will need to be a  paradigm shift. Employers are going to have to go beyond simply attempting to meet OSHA standards.  This means becoming aware of and fixing hazards before they cause harm or long-term health effects.

2. New regulations will be developed more quickly
OSHA is investing ways to speed up the development of new standards. The way things stand now, is a lengthy process.  One of the ways OSHA will improve this process is by exploring alternatives to creating new regulations hazard-by-hazard. In the meantime, the agency wants to increase collaboration with other worker protection agencies, such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, and EPA.

3. Electronic workplace records to be required
OSHA wants to complete its transition to electronic data collection. That will force companies to follow certain OSHA standards to report workplace injuries and illnesses electronically.
