What You Need To Know About Working With Powered Platforms

At one time or another, powered platforms will need to be used on a construction site. They allow access for necessary maintenance work but their operation must be understood in order for them to be used safely. In fact, OSHA regulations contain specific training requirements for powered platforms. At 29 CFR 1910.66(i). The rule says that working platforms must be operated only by persons who are proficient in the operation, safe use and inspection of the particular working platform to be operated.   All employees who operate working platforms must be trained in the following:
  • 1:  Recognition of, and preventive measures for, the safety hazards associated with their individual work tasks.
  •
  • 2:  General recognition and prevention of safety hazards associated with the use of working platforms, including the provisions in the section relating to the particular working platform to be operated.
  •
  • 3:  Emergency action plan procedures.
  •
  • 4:  Work procedures.
  •
  • 5:  Personal fall arrest system inspection, care, use and system performance.
  •
It is also extremely important to know how to inspect the equipment to ensure that it is functioning properly. The following inspections must be performed every day or every time the equipment is used:
  • 1:  Each day before use, the platform and its components must be inspected for visual defects. Also, after an occurrence, they must be inspected for visual defects which could affect the platform's structural integrity.
  •
  • 2:  When any hoisting machine or initiating device for the secondary brake system is removed and reinstalled for testing purposes, related components must be re-inspected before use.
  •
  • 3: The secondary brake governor and actuation device should be tested. If testing is not possible, visually inspect the brake to determine if it is free to operate.
  •
  • 4:  Workers should inspect all suspension wire ropes visually before use and after each occurrence that might affect the rope's integrity.
  •
The following points are related to periodic inspections:
  • 1:  Building supporting structures must be inspected every 12 months.
  •
  • 2:  All parts of the equipment are inspected according to the manufacturer's suggested time interval but not to exceed 12 months. This inspection includes wire ropes, bearings, gears, and governors.
  •
  • 3:  The governors and secondary brakes should be inspected and tested as specified by the manufacturer or at least every 12 months. A competent person must perform the inspection. The results of the inspection and tests must confirm that the secondary brake functions properly.
