With winter upon us, Volvo’s specially-built articulated haulers are clearing snow – all around the world. Last year, 17 Volvo A25D articulated haulers, nine wheel loaders of various Volvo models and a number of Volvo trucks were in use at Stockholm’s busy Arlanda Airport clearing snow off the runways.
To keep the airport moving, a team of 130 people were aided by a wide-ranging fleet of Volvo products featuring specially built accessories. In addition to the Volvo A25D’s, the fleet of Volvo wheel loaders were equipped with snow-ploughs, sweepers and snow blowers – the plough, sweep and blow (PSB) machines.

At the front of the PSB machines, a 7.3 meter wide plough shoveled most of the snow off the tarmac. It was followed by a brush that swept away snow and ice and the job was finished off by a blower. By driving nine such machines alongside each other, it was possible to clear a 3.3 kilometer long and 45 meter wide runway in less than ten minutes.
So the next time you see machinery clearing snow, take a good look. There’s a good possibility it’s a Volvo.
