Single Smooth Drum Rollers

Single Smooth Drum Rollers Rentals

A single smooth drum roller is a used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations. Road rollers use the weight of the machine to compress the surface being rolled or use a vibrating motion to compact the soil or material more effectively. Initial compaction of the substrate on a road project is done using a pad drum roller, which achieves higher compaction density due to the pads having less surface area.

A single drum roller is equipped with a roller drum and rear pneumatic rubber tires. The drum and tire are connected by a rigid frame and/or articulated joint. The cab for the drive is mounted in the middle of the roller and the engine compartment is located behind the cab area. This provides the operator an excellent overview of the machine and work area. A hard scraper directly mounted on the drum prevents soil build-up on the surface of the rollers thus improving overall production. An additional weight is attached to the rear of the roller to increase the power of the compaction of the soil. Most single drum rollers are powered by diesel engines, and incorporate a vibration unit and a driver's cab with ROPS, or roll-over protection structure. While the weights of these machine’s can vary in size, the operating weight ranges between 4.5 and 18 ton with power ranging from 22 to 158 kW.

In today’s addition to the Volvo Rents video series, we explore some of the interesting features of the ECR48, or compact radius machine. The ECR48 is a very specialized unit for highway work or up-close work. Why do we say that?   The ECR48 is constructed so that when it is turning to dig on the sides of the excavator, the back of the machine stays within the footprint of the machine. When rotating, the back of the machine never hangs over the tracks. On other compact excavators, the back end of the machine will protrude when the cab is turned.   This is a very important feature because when you rotate this machine and the back end remains within the footprint, you can pull close to a wall, or building and the operator has the ability to rotate the machine without being...
