A padfoot, or sheepsfoot, roller is typically used for compacting fine-grained soils such as clays or for breaking up and compacting weak bedrock. The padfoot on the roller kneads the soil rather than trying to squash or crush it. Compaction involves placing thin layers of soil at the correct moisture content and then driving the roller over the layer a number of times until the required level of compaction is achieved which an engineer determines.
