It’s Hurricane Season – Are You Ready?

We've all seen the devastation that a hurricane can cause. Well, it's that season again. We can all benefit from some information on how to survive a disaster – whether or not we are in the path of a hurricane.
So what are some of the things you should know about hurricanes? And how can you best protect your business when facing a disaster situation?

  • According to NOAA, a hurricane storm can veer 100 to 150 miles in 48 hours so even if you're following the storm and you think you're out of its path - you could still be a target. And remember, the north side of a hurricane is the most destructive.
  • Prepare for the storm. Make sure you have copies of your business records backed up at a different location prior to the storm. If your records are in a computer you can copy the files onto a disc or email them to a home address. If someone has not put them in the computer, make sure you take copies and originals from the store.
  • If you have equipment on rent for jobs you are working, return the equipment prior to the storm. Most machines will not be covered if they are in your possession and you will be responsible.
  • Make sure all your business insurance policies are paid. Make yourself backup copies and if necessary contact your agent to review your coverage.
  • Many government agencies offer help. Locate those agencies and keep their contact information on file at all times.
  • You should have a good stock of tarps. You will need them for your home and for your business.
  • If you are expecting a disaster situation or bad storm, make sure all of your equipment is fueled up and you have a way to dispense it without power.
  • Also, put all your office equipment high enough off the floor incase of flooding. Remember to backup your paperwork. Stack containers together so the wind doesn't knock them over.
  • Consider all of your business operations. Ask yourself what you can and can not do without power. Explore alternative ways to conduct your business operations without power.
  • Remember, if the power goes out you will need generators. Contact a nearby Volvo Rents store as soon as possible to secure generators for your business.
  • Is your breaker box ready to take on a generator? Is your electrical box ready to hook to?
  • What other equipment might you need in a disaster situation? Chainsaws, grapples, skid steers, wheel loaders, pumps etc. Do you have them available?
  • Consider how you will handle payments. If the power goes out, some companies may not be able to take credit cards.
  • Employees will want to leave as the storm approaches. Do you have a plan for how you will continue to conduct your business?
  • If cell service goes down – how will you communicate? Satellite phone?
  • Do you have enough cash to tide you over if the power is out and money dispensers do not work?
  • Consider backups for your business operations. Speak with nearby companies so that you can work together through the emergency.

Remember, it's hurricane season. If you're prepared -- you'll be able to weather the storm.
