Do It Yourself – Stump Grinding

My wife wanted some trees cleared in our backyard so we can put in a pool for the kids. The trees are too large to take out by their roots so I cut them down.  I just can’t get the stumps level with the soil.  Any advice?

There are two ways to grind that stump. A professional would charge you approximately 150 per stump for removal.  But you can do it yourself by using a stump grinder.  I always stress safety but its imperative here that you wear safety goggles while grinding the stumps. You don’t want a sliver of wood in your eye.  Ear protection would be a good idea too.  Stump grinding can get pretty loud.

Okay.  First, clear the area around the stump you wish to remove.  Remove twigs, debris and rocks so you don’t damage the cutting wheel.  If there’s still a good piece of stump that you can remove manually, use a chainsaw and get it as close to the ground as possible.

Now you’re ready for the stump grinder.  Place the grinder several inches above the stump.  When you begin the wheel, slowly lower it onto the stump and work the grinder from side to side.  Cut down about four or five inches and then move the machine forward and repeat the process.  You will continue this until the stump is no longer an issue.

If you are renting a stump grinder, make sure you receive proper instructions from your rental facility.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of our experts at any one of our Volvo Rents locations.
